Welcome
A Letter
to You
You are not just learning a skill — you are choosing a new way of being.

Dear Student, the purpose of Reiki Level One is to give you practical, real-life tools to work with Reiki in a way that is accessible, empowering, and sustainable.

This course was designed to help you integrate Reiki into your daily life — not just during sessions, but in the middle of your everyday moments. What makes this method different is that it blends Reiki with the principles of energy protection and conscious living. These are game-changers.

You will learn how to use Reiki while driving, grocery shopping, working, or even sitting at a family gathering — subtly but powerfully. You will learn how to become a quiet force of light in the world, like a gentle guardian for yourself and those around you.

Important to Know

There is a common misconception that energy work cannot be harmful. If you do not protect yourself properly, it is easy to absorb the heaviness of others — or accidentally pass it along. Think of those times you came home completely drained after being around certain people. That is energy exchange, and it matters. This course teaches you how to shield your energy, stay grounded, and move through the world with intention.

With the tools in this course, you will also come to know your energy centers — the Chakras — and discover how to use them as a roadmap for balance, healing, and clarity.

I honor the light within you. Thank you for choosing to be a part of healing our world — person by person, beginning with yourself.

Understanding
Reiki
What is this ancient practice, where does it come from, and how does it work? Begin here — with the foundation upon which everything else is built.
Rei
Chapter One
What is
Reiki?
A healing practice as natural as placing your hand on a wound — and as infinite as the universe itself.
REI
Spiritual Wisdom
The omniscient wisdom of the Universe that guides the energy with perfect intelligence
KI
Life Force Energy
The vital energy that flows through all living things — also known as Prana, Chi, or Qi

Together, Rei-Ki means "spiritually guided life force energy." It is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered through gentle touch and based on the idea that an unseen life force energy flows through all of us.

Key Principles
Practitioner Note

The flow and intensity of Reiki energy increases and decreases depending on how balanced the body's energy is — this is true for both the recipient and the practitioner. Over time, your sensitivity to this flow will deepen naturally through consistent practice.

Chapter Two
The History
of Reiki
A story of spiritual quest, divine revelation, and the remarkable transmission of wisdom across generations.
Mikao Usui · The Founder · 1865–1926

Dr. Mikao Usui was born into a wealthy Japanese family in Gifu Prefecture. As a child, he studied Kiko — a health and healing discipline based on life energy similar to Chinese qigong. Intellectually curious and spiritually devoted, Usui studied history, medicine, Buddhism, Taoism, Christian scriptures, psychology, and more, eventually becoming Secretary to the Head of the Japanese Health and Welfare Department.

Feeling ill and disconnected from himself, Usui returned to the practice of energy to find insight. He embarked on a 21-day meditation on sacred Mount Kurama, fasting and praying. On the final day, he experienced a state of satori — sudden enlightenment — in which the Reiki energy entered his consciousness, and he discovered he could transmit it to others without depleting his own life force.

"In April 1922, Usui opened his healing center in Tokyo. A year later, when a great earthquake devastated the city — killing over 140,000 people — he healed tirelessly, reportedly treating six people at once: two with his feet, two with his hands, one with his eyes, and one with his breath."
Historical Record · Tokyo, 1923
Dr. Chujiro Hayashi · 1880–1940

Before Usui's death in 1926, he asked Dr. Chujiro Hayashi — a naval medical officer — to expand and develop a broader system of Reiki. Hayashi established the organized hand positions used to this day, developed the style of multiple healers working on one recipient simultaneously, and started his own school and clinic in Tokyo.

Hawayo Takata · 1900–1980

Mrs. Hawayo Takata, a Japanese-American woman from Kauai, Hawaii, came to Japan carrying diagnoses of a tumor, gallstones, appendicitis, and asthma. She was scheduled for surgery when an inner voice told her there was another way. She found Hayashi's clinic — and within six months of regular Reiki treatments, was completely healed.

Takata trained under Hayashi, eventually reaching Master level. She brought Reiki to the Western world and trained 22 Reiki Masters before her passing in 1980, seeding the global tree of practitioners that exists today.

Your Lineage

As a student of Auviephy Institute, you now trace your lineage directly back through this living chain of transmission — from Auviephy Institute, back through the Western Masters, back to Hawayo Takata, Chujiro Hayashi, and ultimately to Mikao Usui himself. You carry this gift forward.

Chapters Three & Four
Channeling,
Feeling & Healing
Understanding the mechanics of energy flow — and what it means to be a clear channel.
How is Reiki Channeled?

Reiki energy enters the practitioner through the Crown Chakra (top of the head), flows down through the body, and exits primarily through the palms of the hands. The practitioner does not generate this energy — they act as a conduit, a hollow bone through which universal life force flows.

There is no need to concentrate intensely to direct Reiki. The energy has its own intelligence and knows exactly where to go. Your role is simply to show up with clear intention, a clean energetic field, and relaxed, open hands.

Flow Direction

Reiki flows in through the Crown → down through the body → out through the palms. It is drawn by the recipient's need, not pushed by the practitioner's will. This is why Reiki cannot deplete you — you are not giving your own energy.

What Does Reiki Feel Like?
Warmth
Heat in the hands, warmth spreading through the body
Tingling
Gentle buzzing, magnetic density between hands and body
Deep Peace
Profound relaxation, feeling of safety and being held

Not everyone experiences these sensations, and that is perfectly fine. Reiki works whether or not it is consciously felt. Some people see colors; some fall asleep; some feel emotional releases. All experiences are valid.

How Does Reiki Heal?

Reiki heals by restoring the natural, unobstructed flow of life force energy through the body. When Ki — our vital energy — is blocked or depleted due to stress, trauma, or unresolved emotions, physical and emotional imbalances arise.

Pain is often the body's language for energy that needs to move. When you continue to injure one part of your body, it may signal a deeper energetic pattern or emotional theme held in that area. Reiki addresses the root, not just the symptom.

Key Understanding

For total health and wellbeing, the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies must all be in harmony. Reiki works on all four simultaneously — it does not separate the body from the mind, or the mind from the soul.

II
Part Two
The Spiritual
Foundation
The sacred symbols and universal truths that form the energetic architecture of Reiki practice.
Chapter Five
The Reiki
Level One Symbols
Sacred tools that amplify, focus, and direct the flow of healing energy with precision.

The Reiki symbols are traditionally kept sacred — shared only within the context of training and used with reverence. They are not magical objects, but rather energetic keys: when drawn with intention, they activate specific qualities within the Reiki flow.

Practitioner Note

It is an intention universe, not a perfection universe. Simply do your best to remember the symbols as clearly as you can when you need them. The energy responds to sincere intent, not perfect execution.

God & Spirit

This practice was created with the intention that any faith could be applied to it.

Each person experiences their Higher Power differently. Please comfortably insert God, Jesus, Angels, Spirit, Buddha, the Divine, the Universe, or any word of your choosing wherever you encounter the word "Universe" in these pages.

"Reiki recognizes no boundaries of race, religion, or creed. It belongs to all who seek to heal."

III
Part Three
Energetic
Anatomy
The body is not just physical. Beneath the visible form lies a luminous architecture of energy — organs, glands, chakras, and the invisible forces that animate them.
Chapter Six
Anatomy &
the Energy Body
Reiki is not separate from the physical body — it works through and with every system within it.

Understanding basic anatomy helps you understand Reiki. Each organ, gland, and system of the body has an energetic counterpart — and each chakra corresponds to specific physical structures. When Reiki flows to a hand position, it reaches not just the surface tissue but the underlying anatomy.

Pineal Gland
Regulates sleep cycles and circadian rhythms. Connected to the Crown Chakra and higher states of consciousness.
Pituitary Gland
The master gland — regulates all other endocrine glands. Associated with the Third Eye Chakra.
Thyroid Gland
Controls metabolism, energy, and growth. Directly associated with the Throat Chakra.
Thymus Gland
Central to immune function and self-recognition. Located at the Heart Chakra.
Pancreas
Regulates blood sugar and digestion. Connected to the Solar Plexus Chakra.
Adrenal Glands
Govern the stress response — cortisol and adrenaline. Associated with the Root Chakra.
Reiki & the Endocrine System

The seven chakras map remarkably closely to the seven major endocrine glands — the body's master chemical communication network. When Reiki balances a chakra, it may be simultaneously supporting the health and regulation of the corresponding gland and all the systems it governs.

Chapter Seven
The Chakra
System
Seven spinning vortices of energy — the body's invisible power centers and your map to healing.

The word chakra comes from Sanskrit, meaning "wheel." Chakras are spinning energy centers located along the central channel of the body, each governing specific physical, emotional, and spiritual functions. When a chakra is balanced, energy flows freely. When blocked or stagnant, imbalance arises.

Reiki in Practice

In Level One, you will work through all seven chakras using systematic hand positions. You may notice your hands feel warmer, colder, or more energized over certain areas — this is the body's intelligent feedback guiding your treatment.

IV
Part Four
Energy
Protection
Before you can hold space for others, you must first learn to hold yourself — cleanly, fully, without absorbing what does not belong to you.
Chapter Eight
Bubbling Up
& Energy Protection
You are a luminous being. Learn to protect your light.

Energy exchange is constant and invisible. Think of those times you came home completely drained after being around certain people — or felt energized after time with others. This is not coincidence; it is energy moving between fields. As a Reiki practitioner, consciously managing your own energetic field is not optional — it is foundational.

"Bubbling Up" is a visualization technique that creates a protective energetic boundary around your entire being. This boundary allows your own energy to remain contained and prevents you from unconsciously absorbing the energy of others.

How to Create Your Bubble
1
Find Your Safe Place
Close your eyes and picture a place where you feel completely safe, peaceful, and happy. This is your anchor — a beach, a forest clearing, a childhood room, anywhere that brings deep comfort.
2
Feel the Reiki Flow
Imagine Reiki energy flowing in through your Crown Chakra, moving through your body, and radiating outward from your center. Feel it warm and alive.
3
Expand the Bubble
Visualize that energy expanding about 12 inches in all directions around your body — above your head, below your feet, all sides. See it as a glowing, luminous sphere.
4
Set the Intention
Know with certainty: none of your personal energy can escape, and nothing unwanted can penetrate from outside. You are impenetrable. You may give your bubble a color that feels protective to you.
Key Truth

Remember: you can only feel drained or "pick something up" if you allow it at some level. No one can affect your energy without your permission — conscious or unconscious. As you practice Bubbling Up, you reclaim that permission consciously.

Signs Your Bubble is Down
Practitioner Protocol

Always Bubble Up before any Reiki session — both self-treatment and treating others. Check your bubble throughout the session. If it feels compromised, step back slightly and hover your hands rather than maintaining direct contact until your field is re-established.

Chapters Nine & Ten
Energy, Family
& Children
Your energy is your most powerful presence in every room you enter — especially at home.
Positive vs. Negative Energy

Energy cannot be destroyed — it can only be transformed. What we label as "bad" or "negative" energy is simply energy stuck, dense, or misaligned. Every emotion you feel and every thought you think carries an energetic charge. We are all part of a deeply connected system, constantly influencing one another in subtle and profound ways.

With Reiki, you now have the capacity to shift people and environments in a positive direction — not by forcing change, but by raising the frequency of the field. Let your energy become a force for uplift.

Be mindful of how your energy affects the world around you. Let your energy be a force for good. Become the change you wish to see.
Children and Energy

Children are extraordinarily sensitive to energy — they perceive and absorb the emotional field of their environment long before they have language for it. Your thoughts and feelings directly impact your children, even when not expressed aloud.

Children can absolutely learn to "Bubble Up." Teaching them to visualize a protective bubble of light is a powerful, gentle tool for helping them feel safe in overwhelming environments.

Evening Practice for Children

Each night, gently sweep your child's energy field with your Reiki hands — moving slowly from head to feet. As you do, invite the Universe to cleanse and protect them. This simple practice helps them release whatever they absorbed during the day, and reminds them they are always safe.

Family Bubbling

When with family members — especially during conflict or tension — silently Bubble Up. You do not have to announce it or explain it. Simply maintaining your own energetic integrity is a profound act of service to everyone in the room.

V
Part Five
The
Practice
Your responsibilities as a practitioner, how to prepare your space and yourself, and the art of reading the energy field through scanning.
Chapter Eleven
Practitioner
Responsibilities
With the gift of Reiki comes the responsibility to use it with integrity, awareness, and care.
Be aware of how your energy affects every environment you enter — the flow of traffic, your neighbors, your family, your co-workers, and your relationships. Reiki changes you, and through you, it ripples outward.
Never diagnose unless you are a licensed healthcare professional and it is within your professional scope to do so. You can share what you intuitively sense, but frame it as observation, not diagnosis.
Trust your intuition completely. As you channel Reiki, your intuitive abilities will naturally grow. The more you practice, the more confident you will become in what you sense. Pay attention — you are very likely right.
Be aware of your energy's effect on children in particular. Children are especially sensitive to your thoughts and feelings — even when you do not express them verbally. A calm, loving energetic field is the most profound gift you can offer them.
Begin by working with people you know and trust. Ask for honest feedback about what they feel and experience. This builds your confidence and deepens your understanding before moving into a professional context. It is recommended to complete Reiki Master training before charging for sessions.
Before Any Session — Preparation Checklist
Chapter Twelve
Scanning the
Energy Body
Learning to read what your hands know before your mind does.

Scanning is the practice of slowly moving your hands above the recipient's body — typically 2–4 inches above the surface — to detect variations in the energy field. These variations point to areas that need attention.

What You Might Feel While Scanning
Heat or Density
Indicates active energy, inflammation, or an area processing significant change
Cold or Empty
Suggests depletion, withdrawal of energy, or areas needing nourishment
Tingling or Pulsing
Indicates active Reiki flow and energy movement beginning in that area
The Scanning Protocol
1
Bubble Up & Begin the Visualization
Before touching or hovering over any recipient, establish your bubble completely. Then begin the Guided Visualization: imagine Reiki flowing in through your Crown, down through your body, out through your feet into the Earth's center — then rising back up and fountaining from your Crown.
2
Pivot Your Stance
Position yourself slightly to one side rather than standing directly above the recipient's head or feet. The head and feet are powerful energy release points — staying slightly offset keeps you protected from the intense flow at these poles.
3
Scan Each Chakra
Hover your hands 2–4 inches above the body. Begin at the Crown and move downward through each chakra. Pause at each one. Notice any sensations — heat, cold, density, tingling, or magnetic pull — without judgment.
4
Scan the Limbs
From the shoulders, scan down each arm to the fingertips. From the hips, scan down each leg to the foot. Any distortions in the limbs may reflect corresponding chakra imbalances or specific physical concerns.
Trust Your Sensitivity

At first, detecting distortions can feel subtle or uncertain. Trust yourself and allow your awareness to grow naturally. With practice, your sensitivity will deepen — you will begin to sense exactly where to go, sometimes without even needing to scan formally.

24 Self-Treatment
Hand Positions
Your complete guide to treating yourself — the foundation of all Reiki practice. Master these before treating others.
Before you begin: Make yourself completely comfortable, adjust lighting, consider gentle music. Take three slow diaphragmatic breaths — in through the nose, out through the mouth. Draw Cho Ku Rei on your palms to activate Reiki flow. Begin the guided visualization. Hold each position for 3–5 minutes.
Begin Every Session With This
The Guided
Visualization

Imagine the flow of Reiki energy moving in through the top of your head from the Universe...

...gently traveling down through your body, out through your feet, and into the very core of the Earth.

Then feel it rise back up from the Earth's center, into your feet, flowing up through your body, and out the top of your head...

...like a beautiful, radiant fountain of pure healing light.

Return to this visualization whenever your mind wanders during self-treatment. It anchors you in the flow and reminds your body of its natural connection to universal energy.

Why We Treat the Legs & Feet

The legs and feet are the literal and energetic foundation of grounding. Energy that cannot release through the feet becomes trapped in the upper body. Treating the full lower body ensures complete energetic circulation and a deeply grounded, settled state at the end of your self-treatment.

Positions 19 through 23 mirror positions 14 through 18 exactly — applied to the left leg. Left knee → ankle. Left shin → ankle. Cup left ankle. Left shin → foot. Cup left foot. Hold each for 1–3 minutes.

Position 24 — Closing & Completion
Butterfly Feet

Place both feet together and hold them as you open your legs into a butterfly shape. Feel the Reiki flow out of the right foot and into the left, then circulate throughout your entire body. Breathe deeply and allow full integration. If this position is uncomfortable, simply rest your feet on the floor with hands on knees, and beam Reiki energy down through your legs and into the Earth.

Sacred Ceremony
The Reiki
Attunement

The attunement is a sacred ceremony in which your Reiki Master opens and permanently activates your energy channels to the Reiki frequency.

Following the attunement, you may experience: heightened sensitivity in your hands, vivid dreams, emotional releases, a greater ability to perceive energy fields, and a deepened intuitive sense. Your chakras will open, and your vibration will permanently rise to a new level.

Treating
Others
The art of holding space for another's healing — with skill, sensitivity, boundaries, and love.
Chapter Thirteen
Standard Hand Positions
for Treating Others
The full-body treatment sequence — anterior, posterior, and the art of intuitive adjustment.
Anterior (Front of Body) — Recipient Lying Face Up
Position 1
Crown Chakra

Bubble Up. Place your hands over the recipient's Heart Chakra to begin. Pivot your body slightly to one side — the head and feet are strong energy release points, so this keeps you protected. Scan down the Chakras from this starting point.

Position 2
Crown + Third Eye

One hand on the Crown Chakra and one under the base of the head (Third Eye Chakra). Alternate hands to see which placement feels most comfortable — one hand on top, one below.

Position 3
Crown — Both Hands

Place both hands together, fingers closed, gently covering the top of the recipient's head — the Crown Chakra. Hold 1–3 minutes.

Position 4
Throat + Third Eye

One hand under the recipient's neck (Throat Chakra) and one over the Third Eye. Alternate to find which hand in front or behind feels most natural to you and comfortable for them.

Position 5
Eyes

Cover the recipient's eyes by hovering or lightly touching. Keep your fingers together and pointed. This position often induces immediate deep relaxation.

Position 6
Ears

Cup your hands around the recipient's ears, thumbs away from the face. This calms the nervous system and supports the Throat Chakra.

Position 7
Throat

One hand behind the neck and one cupped over the Throat Chakra in front. Touch lightly or hover, depending on the recipient's comfort. Ask before this position.

Position 8
Shoulders

Place both hands on the recipient's shoulders, fingers gently pointed downward. A grounding and calming position. Hold 1–3 minutes.

Continuing the Session

Continue from the shoulders down through the Heart Chakra, Solar Plexus, Sacral, both hips, and down both legs to the feet — following the same pattern established in your self-treatment. Positions 9 through 23 mirror the self-treatment sequence. Repeat all arm and leg positions on both sides. Trust your intuition throughout.

Chapter Fourteen
Intuition-Based Healing
& Closing a Treatment
When the system falls away, only presence remains — and presence is the highest form of healing.
Intuition-Based Hand Positions

Once you have completed the standard hand position sequence, allow yourself to enter a more intuitive mode. Place your hands wherever they are drawn — above, below, or beside the body. You may find your hands hovering over an area with no deliberate decision. This is Reiki guiding itself. Trust it completely.

Developing Intuitive Sensitivity

The more you practice, the more you will sense exactly where to go — sometimes without even scanning. Pay attention to temperature changes, density shifts, and magnetic sensations in your palms. Keep a treatment journal to track patterns you notice over time.

How to Properly Close a Treatment
  1. Complete the energy sweep. With both hands, gently sweep the recipient's energy field from head to feet in long, smooth movements — about 6 inches above the body. This encourages full downward energy flow and integration.
  2. Seal with Cho Ku Rei. Visualize or draw the Cho Ku Rei symbol over the recipient's body to seal the Reiki energy within their field and prevent any unintended release.
  3. Clean your own field. Snap your fingers to break the energetic connection, then wash your hands thoroughly with intention. Some practitioners also perform a full dry-bathing technique from head to feet.
  4. Ground the recipient gently. Lightly hold both feet for 1–2 minutes and anchor their energy back into the physical body. This prevents the "floaty" feeling some recipients experience.
  5. Give time and water. Offer the recipient a moment of silence before speaking. Offer water. Encourage gentle, slow return to full waking consciousness.
  6. Re-establish your bubble. Rebuild your protective field before leaving the healing space or receiving feedback from the recipient.
If You Feel Drained During a Session

Stop and check your bubble. Step back if needed and hover your hands. Reiki flows through you, not from you — if you feel drained, your bubble has likely thinned and you are channeling your own energy. Rebuild your field, refocus on the visualization, and gently re-enter the session.

Your Path Forward
Common questions answered with clarity. Your progression beyond Level One. And a few final words from your teacher.
Chapter Fifteen
Questions &
Answers
The questions every new practitioner asks — answered with clarity and care.
Can I make someone worse by doing Reiki on them?
No. Reiki cannot cause harm. It is guided by its own wisdom and always works in alignment with the recipient's highest good. If someone experiences discomfort after a session, it is usually a sign of energy moving and releasing — a necessary and positive process, even when temporarily uncomfortable.
What if I don't feel anything in my hands?
The Reiki is still flowing. Sensitivity develops with practice. Try holding each position for a full 5 minutes with no distraction. Keep a journal of what you notice — subtle warmth, slight pressure, emotional impressions. Over time, your awareness will expand considerably.
Can Reiki replace medical treatment?
Reiki is a powerful complement to medical care, not a replacement for it. Always encourage recipients to continue with their medical treatments. Reiki works beautifully alongside conventional medicine, often accelerating recovery and reducing anxiety around medical procedures.
How often should I practice self-Reiki?
Daily is ideal. Even 15–20 minutes of focused self-treatment each day will dramatically deepen your sensitivity, maintain your energetic health, and strengthen your ability to treat others effectively. Think of it as your daily energetic hygiene.
Can I charge for Reiki sessions after Level One?
Level One qualifies you to practice Reiki on yourself and others informally. It is recommended to wait until completing Master training before establishing a professional practice or charging fees. In the meantime, practice generously with friends and family, collect honest feedback, and deepen your confidence.
Can children receive Reiki?
Absolutely. Children respond beautifully to Reiki — often more powerfully than adults because they have less analytical resistance to the experience. Sessions for children are typically shorter (15–20 minutes), lighter in touch, and more playful in approach. Always obtain parental consent.
Can Reiki be sent distantly?
Distance healing is a core technique introduced at Level Two, through the use of the Reiki symbol Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen. At Level One, focus on hands-on practice to build your foundational sensitivity. Distance healing will come naturally once you advance.
